What is Rhythmic Gymnastics?
Rhythmic gymnastics is an exceptionally beautiful and captivating sport, and since 1984 it has been part of the Olympic Games. It combines elements of gymnastics, ballet, and expressive movement with music, while using various apparatuses (rope, hoop, ball, clubs, and ribbon). Many even consider it a form of art. In Russia, where the sport originated, it is called “hudozhestvennaya” gymnastics, meaning “artistic gymnastics,” and it is often described as one of the most feminine and elegant sports for girls.
Girls can start rhythmic gymnastics at a very young age, as early as 3 or 4 years old. The sport helps develop motor and coordination skills, grace, creativity, and musicality. It also has a positive impact on the healthy development of muscles and correct body posture, making it an excellent foundation for any other sport later on.
The beauty of rhythmic gymnastics lies in its complexity: the gymnast must first master her body, then the technique with the apparatus, and finally synchronize everything with the music. With beautiful and colorful leotards, which today are part of the fashion industry, combined with the creativity of the gymnast and her coach, rhythmic gymnastics has become a popular sport worldwide. Beyond its elegance and artistry, the sport also offers the joy of friendship, physical activity, and the development of confident and healthy young women. Many studies have also confirmed that exercising with music has a positive influence on intellectual development.
Training in rhythmic gymnastics allows girls to develop natural flexibility and full-body strength. Because of the way the exercises and preparations are performed, the body develops long, lean muscles that give it a slim and toned appearance.
Meet the Founder: Nika Crevatini
Nika Crevatini discovered rhythmic gymnastics at the age of 7 at KRSG “Gazela” in Pula. Her passion for the sport quickly grew, and by the age of 13, in 2003, she moved to Zagreb to join KRG Zagreb, training under Ukrainian coach Svitlana Sergijenko.
From early on, Nika showed exceptional talent. In the cadet category, she became national champion in the individual competition with the ball apparatus. As a junior, she went on to become the Croatian individual and all-around champion, earning numerous medals at international competitions in Belgium, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Israel, including a spot in the Grand Prix finals.
In the senior category, she was the national vice-champion in individual apparatus events (rope, hoop, and ribbon) and in the all-around competition. Over her career, she competed in numerous international tournaments across Europe, winning over 150 medals and trophies.
As a long-time member of the Croatian national team, Nika proudly represented her country at the World Cup in Belarus, Slovenia, and France, at the Grand Prix in Slovenia—where her 14th place with hoop earned her a position on the World Ranking List—as well as in Russia, Israel, Germany, and Ukraine.
In 2009, she was the only representative of Croatia at the 25th European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship in Azerbaijan. Later that year, she competed at the 29th World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship in Mie, Japan, achieving a strong placement for Croatia. During 2009/2010, she was classified as a Category III athlete by the Croatian Olympic Committee.
After thirteen years of active competition, Nika decided to share her passion and knowledge by introducing other girls to the magic of rhythmic gymnastics, inspiring a new generation of athletes.
